Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) recently collaborated with five Indonesian modest fashion brands at Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week (JMFW) to showcase its sustainable and homegrown viscose rayon fabrics. Several of the collections on show featured head coverings and long-sleeve dresses in different colors and styles made from viscose rayon.

“APR’s involvement in JMFW was aligned with our commitment to support the growth of the domestic sustainable textile and fashion industry. We also want to continue to support the Government’s target of making Indonesia a world centre for modest fashion,” said Basrie Kamba, Director, Asia Pacific Rayon .

The breathable and soft nature of viscose rayon makes it a perfect fit for modest wear, especially in tropical Indonesia, he said.

One of the brands which APR teamed up with was Bajufuku, which brought its ‘White Stories’ collection to the JMFW runway. This was an all-white collection inspired by garments worn by Muslims on pilgrimage. Bajufuku’s ‘White Stories’ collection featured an embroidery design with a creative, innovative look.

Another collection by Indonesian designer Yuliana Fitri gave a Korean twist to Batik Sekar Jagad, a traditional batik motif from Java. The collection, which uses navy and white its dominant colors, was developed from recycled textiles from pre-consumer waste.

Modest wear brand Renatha also demonstrated a collection with neon colors and earth tones.

APR also collaborated with design schools at JMFW, including the Islamic Fashion Institute and Universitas Kristen Maranatha. At the event, Universitas Kristen Maranatha demonstrated its sustainable, natural-dyed techniques through its lasem collection. The university had teamed up with local artisans who make hand-developed lasem batik to create this blue-and-white collection.

The Islamic Fashion Institute and Universitas Kristen Maranatha were two of the seven design schools which inked a memorandum of understanding with APR earlier this year. Under the terms of the partnership, the parties will share access to research on sustainable viscose rayon and will also work together to mentor local micro, small and medium enterprises in the fashion sector.

Indonesia is aiming to become a global hub for modest fashion by 2024. Indonesia placed third in the area of modest fashion, ranking after the UAE and Turkey, according to the 2019/2020 State of the Global Islamic Economy Report.
