Asia Pacific Rayon Partners with IBCSD
Jakarta, 31 December 2019 – Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) closed 2019 by announcing a partnership with the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD). Through the partnership, APR – one of the world’s largest integrated rayon manufacturers – is committed to the sustainable production of raw materials and clean manufacturing.
“Today the fashion industry is demanding for more transparency and for companies to go the extra mile to operate efficiently and minimize its environmental footprint. This requires collaboration across all industry stakeholders from government and the private sector. The partnership between APR and IBCSD will be mutually complementary in reaching our respective sustainable development objectives,” said Basrie Kamba, Director of Asia Pacific Rayon.
Shinta W. Kamdani as the Steering Committee President IBCSD and also Vice Chairman of KADIN, accompanied by KADIN committes during the visit to APR’s booth at Trade Expo Indonesia.
These values form the background of APR’s collaboration with IBCSD, an organization with a platform for businesses to share and promote best practices in managing environment risks and leveraging partnerships with the private sector in support of sustainable development goals. IBCSD also acts as a catalyst to foster dialogue between the Indonesian government and civil society organizations with businesses on solutions to advance Indonesia’s efforts on sustainability.
Indah Budiani, Executive Director of IBCSD said: “When key stakeholders in the textile value chain come together in dialogue and collaboration, the fashion industry as a whole will become more competitive, more resilient and adaptable in a fast-changing world, as society and consumers demand more accountability and sustainable development action.”
According to Basrie, the presence of APR is also to support domestic manufacturers and Indonesia’s ambition to develop its textile industry, including to meet the growing global eco-conscious fashion trends. The UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, established in March 2019, is targeting the private sector, UN member states, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders to create a unified movement for a more sustainable fashion industry in line with sustainable practices and ensuring traceability, sustainable sourcing, responsible manufacturing and labor rights.
Indonesia is currently one of the largest producers of rayon in the world with a total capacity of 800,000 tons per year. With domestic consumption ranging between 350,000 and 400,000 tons per year, the production of viscose rayon has abundant potential to boost local demand and reduce imports.
IBCSD provides a platform for businesses to share and promote best practice in tackling risks and taking advantage of opportunities related to sustainable development. It will also act as a key partner to government and civil society providing business input and solutions for Indonesian policies on sustainability issues.
