Asia Pacific Rayon’s 2023 Sustainability Report shows strong progress in making cleaner, greener textiles, supporting local communities and preserving Indonesia’s rich textile traditions
In addition to highlighting our progress and challenges from the previous year, our 2023 Sustainability Report marks Asia Pacific Rayon’s fifth anniversary since the company’s commissioning in 2019.
APR has consistently pursued leadership in the global textile market, recognising sustainable practices as fundamental to the sector’s long-term growth and community well-being. “By investing in research and development, building international collaboration, and implementing innovative solutions, we are working towards a sustainable and prosperous future for the textile industry,” says Basrie Kamba, President Director at APR.
Here are the highlights of our progress in 2023, showing how we’re making measurable gains toward our APR2030 sustainability vision, built on four key pillars:
- Climate and Nature Positive
- Achieved a 91.4% reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions intensity from our 2019 baseline
- Reduced energy use per tonne of Viscose Staple Fibre by 19.4% compared to 2019
These achievements are thanks to smarter energy-saving measures like optimising electricity and steam use and improving machine efficiency. By using less energy per product, we’ve increased production while cutting our carbon footprint.
- Clean Manufacturing
- Reduced water consumption per tonne of production by 38.3% from our 2019 baseline
- Decreased sulphur emission intensity by over 57%, achieving a 94.9% sulphur recovery rate of processing materials
These steps move us closer to our APR2030 goal of cutting water use by 50% from 2019 and hitting the industry target of 95% sulphur recovery.
- Circularity
- Patented a ground-breaking method to produce viscose fibre using a mix of 50% recycled textile pulp and wood pulp
- Partnered with Matahari, one of Indonesia’s top retailers, to expand our Textile Waste Management Initiative, adding 46 denim recycling collection bins across the country
We’re committed to reducing waste at every stage—from production to distribution—and are continuing to explore innovative ways to recycle and reuse materials.
- Inclusive Prosperity
- Women now make up 29% of our workforce, including roles in labs, shift management, and maintenance
- Supported 12 small businesses in showcasing collections at Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week 2024
- Trained 51 participants in batik-making and helped five women continue the traditional art of songket weaving
- Collaborated with 14 local artisans to feature sustainable designs at the Riau Berkain event
These efforts reflect our commitment to empowering women, promoting local artisans, and turning Riau into a regional hub for textiles as part of our APR2030 vision.
