Asia Pacific Rayon Launches Sustainability Report 2024: Clean Manufacturing at the Forefront | Asia Pacific Rayon Skip to main content

Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, demonstrating continued progress in advancing sustainable practices across its operations.

Themed Clean Manufacturing at the Forefront, the sixth annual report highlights several milestones achieved by APR in implementing sustainable manufacturing practices, as well as our continued efforts to strengthen support for local communities.

In 2024, APR achieved the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Aspirational level certification one year ahead of schedule and met the stringent European Union Best Available Techniques (EU-BAT) Polymer BREF standards.

We also became the first viscose staple fibre (VSF) producer in Indonesia to receive the Green Industry (Industri Hijau) certification from the country’s Industry Ministry. These achievements reflect our continued cross-functional collaboration, technical innovation, and the alignment of our operations with our APR2030 sustainability goals.

In the report, Saleel Rajaram Nayak, Head of Operations, Asia Pacific Rayon, highlighted the company’s continued progress towards its 2030 goals: “2025 marks the halfway point in our decade-long APR2030 sustainability agenda.”

“Although we have made significant progress, we know our journey ahead will not be without hurdles. For some of our more challenging objectives – especially in areas like recycled content, waste reduction, and post-consumer feedstock – we will need to build on multi-stakeholder partnerships, sustained investments, and supportive policy and regulatory frameworks.”

Progress was also made in reducing our environmental footprint. Compared to 2019 baselines, APR cut its GHG emission intensity by 91.4%, sulphur emissions by 60.2%, water consumption by 35.2%, and waste intensity by 39.3%. Our solar generation capacity also rose to 26.3 MW, supporting our decarbonisation targets.

Additionally, we continue to trial the use of recycled textile pulp in our manufacturing, in line with  our goal of using 20% recycled content in VSF production by 2030,  despite challenges in scaling up to an industrial level.

Beyond clean manufacturing, we are investing in people and communities. Through initiatives like Rumah Batik, APR supported women-led businesses on patenting their designs to increase their market value. We also supported local artisans and entrepreneurs with training, strategic partnerships, and fashion showcases, including the Jakarta Fashion Week 2025. We also partnered with RGE and the Singapore Fashion Council to showcase six designers from Singapore last year. APR is a member of the RGE group of companies.

Here are the highlights of our progress in 2024, showing how we’re making measurable gains toward our APR2030 sustainability vision, built on four key pillars:

  1. Climate and Nature Positive
  • Achieved a 91.4% in reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions intensity from our 2019 baseline
  • Achieved ISO 50001:2018 certification for our energy management system
  1. Clean Manufacturing
  • Reduced water consumption per tonne of production by 35.2% from 2019 baseline
  • Decreased Sulphur emission intensity and achieving 60.2% Sulphur recovery rate of processing materials
  1. Circularity
  • In 2024, we secured feedstock and continued scaling our patented recycled fibre technology, while navigating the complexities of commercialising textile-to-textile recycling
  • Used plastic straps containing 30% recycled material to secure viscose bale for shipping
  1. Inclusive Prosperity
  • Women now make up 29.9% of our workforce, including roles in labs, shift management, and maintenance
  • Trained 50 workshop participants through Rumah Batik programme
  • Collaborated with 14 local fabric artisans and designers at Riau Berkain event
  • Supported training for 45 local SME’s through two Kelas Berbagi workshops with API Riau
